Moving was never an easy task. There was the packing, the hauling boxes to the van, saying good bye to friends, teachers, lovers, and so on. Then when you arrive at the new place you’re automatically labelled the outcast. You don’t know anyone and everyone looks at you with distaste. It’s hard to make new friends and you generally want to sink into the floor.
That’s why, as you’re sitting in the back of your car - your parents driving in the front - the idea of moving to a completely new area becomes more and more uninviting as you get closer. Why did you have to move anyway? There was nothing wrong with your dad’s old job! And anyway, your old friends would be much more welcoming than whoever you met at the new place. ‘Konohagakure’ it was called. What a name.
With all of this firmly locked in your head, it comes as quite a surprise when you drive over the top of a hill to see a large group of people waiting by the entrance of Konoha holding a large banner reading: ‘Welcome!’ and smiles on their faces.
You wind down the window and look out. They are teens – about your age. You squint hard and see one of them- a boy with blonde spiky hair in an orange jumpsuit- waving at you frantically. You give him a quick wave back then wind the window up again.
You sit back in your seat, a smile slowly spreading out on your face.
‘Maybe I’ll be happy here after all.’
